Famous/scenic spots

  • Sanshiro Islands The Sanshiro Islands is a group of four islands—Denbe, Nakano, Okinose, and Taka Islands—located 200m offshore. Depending on the angle from which they are viewed, there can appear to be three or four islands, hence their collective name. The islands were designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument in 1983.

  • Tombolo Phenomenon At low tide, a strip of land appears between the mainland and the closest island, Denbe, making it possible to walk to the island without getting your feet wet. Known as “tombolo”, this phenomenon is extremely rare, even in Japan.

  • Cape Koganezaki Bathed in the glow of the sunset, the cliffs of Cape Koganezaki shine like gold. This scenic spot is renowned for its beautiful sunsets and magnificent views of Suruga Bay and Mt. Fuji. The entire cape is a park, and there are nature trails, a grassed plaza, and an observation platform. From spring until autumn, the Collection Garden bursts with daylilies, poppies, rapeseed, and many other flowers in bloom.

  • Tensodo Cave Dogashima’s greatest attraction, the Tensodo Cave is made of tuff and comprises a beehive of underground tunnels carved out by the ocean waves. Inside the dark cave, beams of sunlight pierce through the ceiling and into the ocean’s surface, creating a mysterious spectacle. The Tensodo Cave is located along the Dogashima Trail, and it is also possible to view the cave from above.

  • Lovers’ Cape Located at the end of the 700 m Fujimi Trail, Lovers’ Cape has an observation platform providing views over Suruga Bay stretching from Cape Omaezaki to Mt. Fuji, as well as a Love Call Bell. It is said that ringing the Love Call Bell while calling out your beloved’s name will make your dreams of love come true.

  • Travelers’ Cape The beautiful sunsets viewed from this cape have appeared in the works of Naoki Prize-winning author Akira Sasakura. The staircase-like terrace located on top of the cliffs provides a panoramic view of Suruga Bay, and with good luck, you can also see as far as Shimizu and Shizuoka across the bay. The beauty of the sun sinking below the horizon at sunset presents a breathtaking panorama that it is beyond description.

  • Matsuzaki Bathing Beach Located close to the downtown area, this wide, shallow beach is 500m in length, but the area’s main appeal is the beautiful sandy beach. Access is good, and the beach is popular with young people and families with children as a place to enjoy sea kayaking and other marine sports.

  • Cape Koganezaki Bathing Beach This sandy beach is a bathing beach measuring 100m in length. The water is highly transparent, and there is also an area where you can enjoy gathering shellfish.

  • Tokko-no-Yu Hot Springs Tokko-no-Yu is where Shuzenji Hot Springs began. Legend has it that while on a pilgrimage around Japan, the Buddhist priest Kobo Daishi was so moved by the sight of a boy trying to wash his father, who was ill, in the Katsura River that he struck a rock in the river with an iron Yutokkosho stick (Buddhist alter tool). Water sprang from the rock, and Kobo Daishi taught the father and son hot spring therapy.

  • Shimoda Aquarium This aquarium makes use of a natural cove. The aquarium presents a range of fun shows featuring our ocean friends, beginning with the dolphin and sea lion shows.   • Kayama Yuzo Museum Musician and film star Kayama Yuzo is a devoted fan of Western Izu and Dogashima, so much so that he has established the Kayama Yuzo Museum here, offering visitors a comprehensive view into his world. The Shopping zone on 2F is lined with shops selling local Western Izu products, miscellaneous goods, and various other goods—some 3,000 items altogether!

  • Koganezaki Crystal Park Opened in April 1997, Koganezaki Crystal Park is an art museum specializing in modern glass. While collecting and exhibiting outstanding glass works from throughout Japan and the world, the museum also regularly holds exhibitions on original themes.

  • Toi Gold Mine Worth approx. 1.2 billion yen at current prices, the gigantic 250 kg gold nugget on display here is undoubtedly worth a look.   • Numazu Minato Shinsenkan Markets Giving visitors the sense of being on a boat, this market mall could only be found in Numazu. Beginning with marine products, the market sells locally produced tea and vegetables, as well as sushi made with fresh seafood, and there are even restaurants. The market is packed with shops that are famous in the Numazu area.
